Channa Dal Chutney (Kadalai Paruppu Chutney)


Channa Dal Chutney (Kadalai Paruppu Chutney), is a different chutney recipe.It goes well with idli and dosa.


  • 3 tbsp Channa dal/Kadalai Paruppu
  • 1 ½ Red chilli (to taste)
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida powder
  • 4 Small onion chopped
  • 2 Tomatoes chopped
  • 2 tbsp Shredded coconut
  • Salt to taste

To Temper:                                                                                

  • 1 tsp Oil
  • ¼ tsp Mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp Urad dal
  • 1 stick Curry leaves



  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add channa dal/kadalai paruppu and roasted for 3 mins.
  2. And then add red chilli and asafoetida powder and mix well.
  3. Add small onion and sauté for 2 mins. Then cool down.
  4. In a same pan, add tomatoes and sauté for 2-3 mins or mushy consistency.
  5. In blender, add roasted dal, red chilli, asafoetida, small onion and then add shredded coconut and then grind.
  6. And then add salt and mushy tomatoes in a same blender to grind a fine paste.
  7. To temper the channa dal/kadalai paruppu chutney.
  8. Channa Dal Chutney/Kadalai Paruppu Chutney is ready now.

Sample Pictorial:


Take tomato chopped, channa dal,red chilli,shredded coconut,small onion,asafoetida powder and salt.



Heat oil in a pan. Add channa dal and roasted for 3 mins or golden color.



Add red chilli and mix well and saute for a min.



Add asafoetida powder and mix well.



Add small onion and saute for 2 mins and cool down.



In a pan, add tomatoes.



Saute for 3 mins.



In blender, add channa dal mix and shredded coconut and mix and grind.



Add salt and tomatoes and grind a fine paste. I forgot to take tomato grind pic.



Grinded chutney.
